From 1 October 2026, Meta is rolling out new charges for businesses using WhatsApp Business. If you’re running campaigns or managing customer communication through the platform, here’s what you need to know.

Up until now, customer‑service replies within the 24‑hour window were free. That’s ending. From October, service replies will cost around R0.12 per delivered message. Marketing messages like promotions, offers, or broadcast campaigns already carry a fee of R0.62 per delivered message in South Africa.

To put that into perspective:

  • A 10,000‑message marketing campaign will cost about R6,200 in Meta fees.
  • Even routine service updates, like appointment reminders, courier delivery notices or order confirmations, will start adding up at R0.12 each.

Meta has said it will publish the final service rates for each market before the change takes effect.

These charges only apply to businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform. That means:

  • Marketing Agencies running campaigns for clients
  • Companies using automation, chatbots, or CRM integrations
  • Large‑scale communication setups like banks, airlines, or retailers

If you’re just using the free WhatsApp Business mobile app for small‑scale chats, you won’t be affected. And ordinary WhatsApp users? No change at all.

Marketing / Communication Strategies will need to be relooked at such as deciding who to message, how often, and whether WhatsApp is the right channel for the job.

Automation clients will feel it most. Chatbots, broadcast lists, and large‑scale customer communication can rack up thousands of messages quickly, turning into significant monthly expenses.

Even customer‑service replies won’t be free anymore, so if you’re running WhatsApp campaigns, budget for Meta’s per‑message fees.

It’s a reminder that no platform stays free forever… eventually, every channel looks for a way to monetize its reach.
