For as long as I can remember, I’ve written a Women’s Day blog dedicated to my daughter - words of encouragement and guidance. This year feels different. It’s her first year stepping out into the world on her own, beginning her study journey with career dreams and independence taking shape. As I write this year, I find myself not only speaking to her, but to every young aspiring woman. These reflections are both a mother’s gift and a mentor’s compass guiding courage and authenticity.

Be unapologetically authentic - no one is better at being you than you. Don’t hide behind filters or try to look different or act like someone else. Own your uniqueness, own your space and be proud of the woman you are becoming.

Choose friends who uplift you - hang out with friends who fill your cup, who have your best interests at heart, choose joy over drama, and let laughter be the soundtrack of your social circle. Nurture true friendships, for they are the ones you’ll lean on for emotional support through countless seasons of life.

Build your inner circle with intention - surround yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you, and whose influence elevates you. Choose your circle wisely; the people you spend the most time with will shape your thinking, and even how others perceive you.

Protect your online brand - once you share online, you surrender control over where it travels and who may see it. Your digital footprint is permanent; every post becomes part of your lasting story, shaping opportunities or closing doors.

Trust your gut - If something feels off, trust your intuition. Your gut is often wiser than your doubts; listen to it, and let it guide your choices. Above all, choose safety.

Be bold enough to try new things - keep chasing adventure and new experiences, and never stop creating memories that enrich your journey. And never ever be embarrassed to step forward and take your turn.

Your ‘NO’ is enough - you never owe anyone an explanation for protecting your boundaries. People will treat you the way you allow them to, so stand firm in your worth. Every time you safeguard your limits, you teach others how to value and respect you.

Collect memories, not possessions - the laughter shared, the adventures embraced, and the moments of joy will outlast any object you can buy. And always live within your means; debt is an unnecessary awful stress. Money gives you choices; financial independence is empowering.

Embrace lifelong learning - studying is more than a degree; it’s about building curiosity, adaptability and understanding. There are all sorts of learning; be open to dynamic lifelong personal development.

Build confidence in your voice - your perspective matters, even if you are the youngest in the room. Learn to use your voice wisely, not disrespectfully.

Seek mentorship early - find role models and mentors who can guide you through career choices and challenges. Learn from those who have walked the path before you, even if their Gen X ways want to make you cringe!

Network with purpose - building authentic connections can open doors, so nurture relationships purposefully. Diverse connections developed from within your life circles, such as studies, sport, church, and work environments, all add tremendous value one day or another.

Have a giving heart - when you contribute your time, skills, or resources to something bigger than yourself, you not only uplift others but also enrich your own sense of purpose. Make the world a better place!

Prioritise wellbeing - balance ambition with self‑care. Success takes hard work and sacrifice, but busy people find time for healthy destress routines like exercise. I truly believe a positive mindset will ensure happiness.

Resilience over perfection - be comfortable that setbacks are part of the journey. Learn to reframe failures as lessons that strengthen your path. You can’t shortcut experience; just never give up.

Stay true to your values - align your career choices with personal values. Alignment with company culture leads to job motivation and satisfaction. Screen a potential employer as much as they will screen you.

Don’t let AI diminish your brilliance - technology can assist, but it must never replace your ability to conceptualise, to write, to think critically, to strategise, to be sincere, and to create with heart. Your originality is irreplaceable.

Dream beyond boundaries - don’t let societal expectations or self‑doubt define your path. Give yourself permission to chase the visions that light you up.

Define your BHAG - set one big, hairy, audacious goal for yourself aligned to your career aspirations, and it’s okay if the goal evolves; the point is to think expansively. Celebrate courage and progression, not just achievement.

And just for you my Aly Cat, remember… It's always worth waking up early to see the sunrise!
